Material Name(s): Vitis vinifera (Grape Seed Extract (GSE))
Grape Seed Extract is a dietary supplement made by removing, drying and pulverizing the bitter-tasing seeds of grapes. Grape seeds are rich in antioxidants, including phenolic acids, flavonoid and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPC’s). Proanthocyanidins are naturally found chemical compounds in plants. They give fruit and flowers their natural color known as pigment. Plant pigments are well studied for their importance in overall health and disease prevention. Pigments belong to a group of compounds named polyphenols. Eating a diet rich in plants and a variety of rainbow-colored whole foods can help you obtain the benefits of these compounds from food. However, grape seed extract is one of the best-known sources of OPC’s.
Grape seed extract, due to the polyphenol content, has been shown to improve the digestive system and support brain health. Antioxidants are important because there are invaders (free radicals) that can enter the body to create instability in the cells which can do damage to the cell itself, but mostly create a cascade effect to destabilize otherwise healthy cells.
