A 2018 double-blind clinical trial was conducted to determine the effect of zinc supplementation on patients with severe head trauma. 100 patients aged 18 to 65 were randomized to receive 120mg zinc or placebo daily for 15 days. Assessments of organ failure, overall outcomes, and inflammatory markers were significantly better in the group given zinc by day 16 of treatment. Length of hospital stay was also shorter in the zinc group and mortality rate by day 18 was also lower compared to the group given placebo.
