This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial published in 2022 assessed the efficacy of two types of calcium forms: carbonate and citrate in the ability to increase calcium levels in individuals with parathyroid deficiencies. Both forms were effective in increasing serum calcium levels. Calcium citrate seems to have increased urine oxalate excretion which may reduce risks for nephrolithiasis.
