Material Name(s): Vitamin E, Tocopherol, Mixed Tocopherols: delta-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol, beta-tocopherol
Tocopherols are a family of compounds that together with tocotrienols make up the complete vitamin E complex. There are eight naturally occurring forms of vitamin E, including four tocopherols: alpha-tocopherol, beta-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol and delta-tocopherol, each with a slightly different chemical structure. Mixed tocopherols are found in oils including olive oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil, nuts, seeds and in some leafy green vegetables.
Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that protects cells from oxidative stress, and which cannot be made by the body. Oxidative stress results from the overproduction of free radicals which cause oxidative damage to cells and contributes to the development of chronic disease.
