Potassium chloride is a compound made of potassium and chlorine and is vital to many processes in the body. Potassium has electrolyte effects on cells and nerves, supporting the ability of nerves to transmit signals and the ability of muscles to contract, which helps regulate heart rhythm. Even mild deficiencies in potassium may result in nervous disorders, insomnia and irregular heartbeat.
The involuntary contraction of muscles can be attributed to electrolyte imbalances, insufficient consumption of minerals potassium and chloride, or from dehydration. This alters muscle contraction as well as nerve conduction that stimulates muscle contraction. Repleting the lost minerals can restore regular muscle contraction.
