Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) is a citrus fruit native to the coastal Calabrian region of Italy. A member of the Rutaceae family, the fruit is the size of an orange, yet similar in color to a lime or even yellowish, depending on the ripeness. Bergamot extracts are particularly rich in flavones and flavanones including: neoeriocitrin, naringin and neohesperidin. All been isolated and identified in bergamot.  

Some of the flavonoids in bergamot have a similar mechanism of action as classic treatment used by cholesterol-lowering drugs, with the other flavonoids providing added benefit of also increasing HDL to scavenge free cholesterol. Further, its antioxidant properties can prevent inflammation associated with vascular damage, making this supplement effective in managing the risks associated with cardiovascular concerns.

Supports maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels

Flavonoids can counter the LDL-C increases that result from a high-fat diet. Such flavonoid treatment is also associated with an increase in HDL-C. HDL scavenging of cholesterol prevents the inflammatory reaction that propagates plaque development. Consequently, by reducing LDL-C and increasing HDL-C, flavonoid therapy may have multiple modes of action with regard to cholesterol clearance. Flavonoids can also increase uptake of plasma cholesterol by the liver, by up-regulation of LDL receptors on the surface of hepatocytes.

Antioxidant properties can prevent inflammation associated with vascular damage

Bergamot contains a diverse and concentrated flavonoid profile, making it beneficial for many cardiovascular processes. Flavonoids, particularly those derived from bergamot, have broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism likely involves a direct inhibition of the pro-inflammatory NF-κB pathway. Since inflammation is a major driver of atherosclerosis, particularly through the NF-κB pathway, this represents one means by which flavonoids control development and progression of CVD.

While cholesterol is necessary for many physiologic processes in the body, excessive amounts can be detrimental by causing atherosclerosis. Individuals with high cholesterol can reduce overall cholesterol by diet and lifestyle changes as well as drugs or supplements that reduce production or increased excretion of cholesterol. Further the ratio of HDL:LDL is important when discussing cholesterol related risk. 

Cholesterol found within the low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c), along with excess triglycerides can cause the formation of plaques in blood vessels. This can then lead to narrowing of arteries and oxygen deprivation to certain tissues. However, high density lipoproteins scavenge the blood and tissues for free cholesterol and take it back to the liver for excretion. Glucose dysregulation can shift the ratio towards LDL and can also increase vascular damage.
