Material Name(s): Astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis
Astaxanthin is a unique carotenoid with powerful antioxidant properties. Carotenoids are yellow, red, and orange natural pigments produced by algae, plants and some bacteria. AOR’s astaxanthin is a natural extraction from microalgae called Haematococcus pluvialis. H. pluvialis being the most studied source of astaxanthin.
Unlike many common antioxidants which tend to have both antioxidant and pro-oxidant properties, astaxanthin is a pure antioxidant that does not turn into a free radical during the process of quenching free radicals. Free radicals can form from various sources such as air pollution, alcohol intake and over exercising. Without antioxidants free radicals can take over and that can lead to oxidative stress. If prolonged in an oxidative stress state, then it can lead to DNA damage and untimely cell death.
Clinical trials have demonstrated considerable evidence that this carotenoid shows promising applications in many areas of human health including protecting against UV-radiation, photo oxidation, inflammation, neurovascular protection, immunomodulation, eye health, heart health and prostate health.
Technical insights:
- Country of origin: China
- Starting material: unbroken cell wall of Haematococcus pluvialis
- It should be noted that currently 95% of astaxanthin available in the market is produced synthetically using petrochemicals due to cost-efficiency for mass production. AOR’s Astaxanthin is found in nature and produced by extraction of Hematococcus pluvialis biomass.
- Washed and cleaned in purified water and dried
- Stored form: Powder; dark red, potency 20-25%, characteristic odor
