In a clinical study, 56 patients with one or more kidney stones smaller than 10 mm were given an infusion (tea) of P. niruri dry extract for 12 weeks. Patients were to drink the tea daily for one week, then take a break for one week, then continue alternating treatment weeks. Patients were followed up with again 12 weeks after the end of the treatment period. Ingestion of P. niruri infusions led to a significant increase in urinary potassium and magnesium from baseline, and increased urinary citrate levels which is protective against calcium stone formation.
