Lactoferrin is the second most abundant protein found in colostrum (the first milk, or a baby's first meal after birth). Evidence suggests that supplementation with lactoferrin increases activity and stimulates the production of certain immune cells. Lactoferrin has been used in several studies to reduce the risk of infection in newborns in hospital neonatal units. As a result, manufacturers of baby formula in some countries have made lactoferrin a part of their formulas.
Lactoferrin is an iron transporter glycoprotein originally isolated from bovine milk. Lactoferrin is a multitasking protein with various biological roles including binding to iron, which contributes to its beneficial effects.*
