Methylcobalamin is the active, coenzyme form of vitamin B12. Cyanocobalamin, the most common form of supplemental B12, must be converted first into hydroxocobalamin, and then into adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin.
Since cyanocobalamin has to undergo this extensive conversion process, supplementation with methylcobalamin is preferable, and it is also the specific form of B12 shown to support the brain and nervous system. Methylcobalamin may also help normalize sleep-wake cycles, providing better-quality sleep for some.
