When thinking about self-care as a mom it’s easy to fall into the trap of “mom guilt.” We tend to feel bad about taking time for ourselves when we could be doing something for our kids or our home. But as we’ve all heard, it’s more detrimental to our mental (and physical) health to neglect our own needs. When moms put themselves on the back burner for too long resentment can build and/or we can burn out. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could deal with stress in a very calm and controlled manner? This wouldn’t be the same as repressing your anger or hiding the fact that you’re upset. This would be the ability to tolerate stress in a way that your heart rate doesn’t increase, you don’t have to feel the need to raise your voice, and you don’t feel angry or frustrated inside. Did you know that stress actually causes certain hormones to be released in your body that prevent you from thinking clearly in moments of stress? When you increase your tolerance for stress, your cognitive function and ability to problem solve is improved. There are ways to increase your tolerance for stress so that you can remain calm even when things get chaotic around you.
Focus on the Immediate Problem
One of the things about stress is that it can make you feel like the whole world is crumbling down around you. This can make you start to think about all the things are going wrong instead of the main thing that deserves your attention. One way to increase your tolerance for stress is to focus on the immediate problem. As the saying goes, take care of what needs to be taken care of today. Tomorrow is another day.
Don’t Feel The Need To Act Out
Sometimes people under stress rant and rave in order to show other people how upset they are or how big the problem is. All this really does is make it more difficult to be heard, and raises your blood pressure. Don’t feel the need to act out in order to communicate your feelings. Instead, focus on coming up with the right words to express how you feel. The calmer you can communicate, the more likely it is that the other person will actually hear you and listen to what you have to say.
When things get very chaotic around you, it can help to find that center place inside yourself where there is calm and peace. Practice doing this during times when you don’t feel stressful. The more familiar you are with the sensation of centering yourself, the easier it will be to do when you find yourself in a stressful situation.
